Hi,

I'm completely new to building a computer and couldn't find info this anywhere. If it helps I'm thinking of getting the MSI X99a Gaming Pro Carbon as my motherboard. If i were to use this setup with 40 lanes (I'm assuming with 28 lanes the first GPU will be seriously impaired):

2x GPU in SLI
1x Intel 750 SSD
1x Samsung Pro SSD M.2
2x HDD

How many PCIe lanes would this configuration use? Can someone give me a breakdown of how many each of them would use in this set up? If i had to take a guess I would say

GPU 1 x16
GPU 2 x8
Intel 750 SSD x 4
M.2 SSD x 4
And the other 8 lanes will be assigned to 2x HDD, 1x optical drive and all the USB 3 ports?

Solution
32 your hard drives unless plugged into a adapter for pci don't really use your pci express lanes m.2 does however unless you got a new board where the m.2 pathways are routed straight to the cpu some thing new third doing

It's not very typical case to run out of bandwidth from the board. You'd have to do something that utilizes all those things same time. If you are just going to play with the computer then there's not much to worry.

Thanks for the recommendation, its a good board but at $690, its quite expensive for me. I've just bought a board from MSI so I'm good for now.
