Hi all,

I recently moved home and finally have the internet up and running.

My router is a brightbox router, it turns on fine and can connect wirelessly to it with no issues.
My PC is another matter.
The PC is upstairs and the router downstairs, so to get round this I got TP link powerline adapters.
One adapter is plugged into the wall, and connected to the router, the other is upstairs, plugged into the wall and connected to the PC. All lights are green and showing.
When I try to connect, I get an error. Running the windows troubleshooter it says that it cant get a valid IP. When I try to renew my IP it says that it cannot contact the DCHP server. When I try to ping the router it fails.
I cannot copy and paste the ipconfig results, sadly, so I took a photo:

I have tried different ethernet cables from the PC to powerline adapter with no joy. I will be going tomorrow to get a long ethernet cable to try connecting the PC directly into the router. In the mean time, I would be grateful for any tips.

Thanks.

Try resetting the two powerline adapters, which usually involves holding the reset button on them for 15-20 seconds until the lights on them flash -- consult your manual for exact details. PL adapters sometimes set up their own distinct network with no real connection to anything except one another but not beyond, which results in results like those you are seeing.

If you are using dynamic IPs you could be running into an IP conflict with another machine. Go into your network and sharing center, and click on the connection type (local area connection). Click on properties, and scroll down to tcp/IPv4 and click on properties. Make sure the option to obtain ip address automatically is selected.

Otherwise, powerline networki g relies heavily on the wiring of your house. Its entirely possible that your new house isnt wired as well as your last place. For me personally, i am better off with wifi compared to powerline.

EDIT: Use the print screen button to take a screenshot of your monitor. You have to go into paint or something similar and paste it, but will save you from having to take a picture next time :)
