So I went out and bought an AMD Radeon R9 290 made by sapphire I got it from Newegg for a whopping 209.00 free shipping CAD . I'm like sweet! It arrived before paypal even displayed the funds were spent! Like I bought it last night and got a call from Purolator that it had arrived.

Now to the question.

I installed it into slot one of 2 pcie slots and with my thermaltake 550w 80+ bronze psu and it's 8pin plus it's 6pin

It starts up fine however 8 mins or so in I get no signal and the fan speeds increase to almost jet engine proportion

Thanks to the lovely people here at Tom's and thinking at first that it's my psu I decided to follow someone's advice and try slot 2 of my pcie

This seams to have worked??? I'm 15 mins into a game and it's fine.

Question is should I be concerned about the mono? What else could have happened Mayne a driver???

Solution
R9 290 = 300W or so at full power
6950 = 200W or so at full power
plus whatever your CPU uses, call it 100W to be fair

so, ok, it uses more power, but it should be enough unless your PSU is the cheap TR2 series. it could be a thermal issue, though, if the GPU chip shuts down and fans go nuts while the rest of the system keeps running.
