i7-920 vs. i3-6100

Recently made a post about a office/htpc computer with the intention of buying the $120 i3-6100. However, I have now discovered a great buy of a i7-920 for $40.

My questions are: 1) what processor is better for the purpose of office work/multitasking/movies? and 2) what is the upgrade path from the 920 (LGA 1366)?

The i3 wins. However much you multitask, most tasks are still and will remain because of their inherent nature, single threaded performance dependent. And the i3 shines in that regard.

1)for the i7 you need either an expensive new old model mobo or used one, and unlike wine, they don't get better with aged.
2)upgrade path for i7 920, it to replace it newer gen.

Yeah. Nobody would really recommend a pure dual core nowadays.
