So, I built a new pc earlier today. The specs are :
cpu - i5 6600k
mobo - Asus Z170-A
ram - 16 GB DDR4 HyperX Savage 2400MHz
storage (SSD) - Samsung 850 Evo 250 GB
storage (HDD) - Western Digital Blue 7200rpm 1TB
psu - Corsair RM650x

I installed Windows 10 64-bit in the SSD and it works perfect.

For the HDD, I opened the windows Disk Management and tried to initialize as MBR in order to create partitions and be able to use the disk. After about 2 seconds it stopped initializing with the message "Data error (cyclic redundancy check)". Then I tried to initialize as GPT. It managed to initialize but when trying to create a new volume or convert to MBR it throws the same error and upon restarting the system the disk was still uninitialized. In addition the boot process took about three minutes whereas before that it was booting into windows in about 12 seconds. I tried a couple of times more, then I tried again in different sata ports and with different sata cables. One time the disk was not even detected by windows. In bios the disk is always visible. Then, I took the disk entirely off the system and it now again boots very fast (11 sec).

I downloaded HD Sentinel and it says that the disk has 4 corrupted sectors and a health of 98%. It also says that this health is "perfect". The HDD is brand new.

I'm thinking of returning it since it is still in warranty and so far it seems bricked. From what I've seen in the internet this "cyclic redundancy check" error is pretty much game over for the disk. Still, since it is quite healthy (according to HD Sentinel) is there anything else I could try?

Hi there freddyisback,

Sorry that you are facing some issues with your WD drive. :(
You've done some good troubleshooting. It seems that the drive is failing. Yet, you can run both short and extended DLG tests on it as Colif suggested.

My suggestion would be to just contact the place you got it from and RMA the drive. Yeah, CRC error could be associated with some hardware flaw.

Cheers,

Thank you for your answers.

I downloaded the WD diagnostics tool and run both quick and extended test. They both failed within seconds.

The fast test with error "06-Quick Test on drive 2 did not complete! Status code = 07 (Failed read test element), Failure Checkpoint = 97 (Unknown Test) SMART self-test did not complete on drive 2!".

The extended test with error "08-Too many bad sectors detected".

So, since I cannot use the disk I will RMA it.Thanks again for your answers.

Well, even if the drive is usable, just a single bad sector means that the drive is unreliable. You should always contact the manufacturer(no matter which one) in similar cases and RMA the drive, of course, if it is under warranty.

To sum it up: Test your drives from time to time.

Hope everything would go well with the RMAing process.

Cheers,
