Deleting OS on my HDD on a new mobo

So recently my computer has been acting wonky as it did not display anything on my monitor nor was there any connections to anything plugged in and this happened at the same time most of my parts for my new PC build was coming in. Sadly I wasn't able to move anything over to an ext. HDD so I thought using my same HDD on my new build would work, not thinking about the OS and mobo problems. So my question is, is it possible to start up my new build on an SSD and then plug in my HDD to delete the OS and keep all the files on it, or would I have to just go on with a new HDD and just face the consequences of reinstalling and losing my files such as music, photos, etc?

If anything is unclear please mention it down below. Thanks!

That is exactly what im saying I assumed you were new and doing it in that way will eliminate any possibility of putting it on old hard drive and it formatting it by accident during installation process

So from what I can infer, you are saying that I can still use my old HDD but I'll have to format it after I install my new OS on my SSD. If so, would I still have a chance to move over any files that are on my HDD to an external HDD?

So are you saying that I should install the OS on my SSD before I plug in my HDD? Sorry if I'm asking too many questions it's my first time having this problem.
