I have a ASRock Fatal1ty H170, and I was planning to get a m.2 ssd, but from what I've read there are a few types of m.2. How do I know the compatibility of m.2 to my mobo?

Solution
I'm running a asrock 990fx extreme 6 board so ya ain't got to worry bought that just need to update your bios Incase ya get a nvme based m.2 ssd then check your mother board manual and or the PDF from thier website for your board for the 4 digit number sizes your board suupports like mine supports like 4 different lengths ect. They even list those 4 digit number sizes on new egg for a majority of the m.2 drives they got on there so my guess yours supports just as many as mine. They use numbers like 2240 2280 ect for the actually physical size / length of the m.2 drives for example and asrock released bios updates for nearly all thier current boards to support the new nvme ssd s . Nvme is a new type of ssd controller thier using to try...
According to the tech specs for your board:

*If M2_1 is occupied by a SATA-type M.2 device, SATA3_0 and SATA3_1 will be disabled.
Support to be announced

**Supports ASRock U.2 Kit
Supports NVMe SSD as boot disks

The different M.2 numbers you see refer to length of the M.2 card. Most are interchangeable.

What does the "support to be announced" mean?

So to simplify ya need to check morel type 4 digit codes the slot supports and then check and update your bios if ya get a newer nvme m.2 witch will still have a 4 digit type size number tell ya right now just buy looking and third site long as update your bios it supports the Samsung 950 pros and thier 951 OEMs the 950s come in data size of 256 and 512 the OEMs 256gb to 1tb. Amount of data it hold ain't the same as the type size 4 digit codes they use . Only saying that for peeps that hardly know anything about comps
