Can I over clock an i3 6100 on a asrock fatality mini atx mobo if so what is involved in getting it to be able to if not is there a mini itx mobo that I can oc an i3 6100 on and is the oc worth it?

Solution

The 'bug' you're referring to was closed in later BIOS updates, it essentially let someone overclock a non-K CPU using the multiplier. As far as I know the bug only existed on Z170 motherboards.
As for the i3-6100 vs 6300/6320, the latter two are 3-6% faster (100-200MHz respective...

An i3 does not have an unlocked multiplier so the only way to overclock it is to increase the system's BCLK (base clock), that's if your MB even has that option. Problem with BCLK method of overclocking is that it also overclocks the memory too, and even effects the PCI subsystem. This can cause instability in the overall system. But yes, it is possible if you don't go too far.

I know it's not unlocked but from my understanding you don't run into though issue with Skylake because the chips are build differently then the old ones. But I've gotten mixed info from other sources if I can still oc them through blck because intel was putting a stop to it. I know some mobos you still can but I was trying to make sure the on the fatality mini itx. As a side question would it be worth the extra money to go for the 6300 or 6320.

As for the i3-6100 vs 6300/6320, the latter two are 3-6% faster (100-200MHz respective higher clock speeds) and have an extra 1M of cache (4M vs 3M). You wouldn't see any real-world difference with the extra cache unless you're relying on the iGPU (i.e. you don't plan to use a discrete GPU).

Cool thank you for that I don't know why review sights just can't say it plain and simple like that. I was thinking about the 6320 but didn't like how much more it was then just the 6100 I mean for that little difference I don't understand why they made the 6300 at all and the 6320 should just be in its spot only $20 more then the 6100 max. I'm planning on getting either the Rx 470 or 1050 ( or wtv they are going to go with) hopefully at Christmas by then I hope at least one will be for sale and in stock. So I think the i3 will pair nicely I plan on upgrading it when the next gen CPUs drop to a full on multi core but I've heard some great things about the 6100. Back to the first part do you think I could still blck the i3 and is it worth it?

You could, but only if the MB has an option to modify the BCLK setting in the BIOS. And typically you can only push the BCLK up to 5% before you experience system instability. That means on a 3GHz CPU you might be able to push it up to 3.15GHz, not really all that earth shattering of a difference.

I have decided to forgo an i3 altogether and go with an i5 6500. To answer my question from before after some research. You can over clock and Skylake processor on that mobo. For non k CPU you can over clock them by flashing an old bios to the Mobo that allowed over clocking through blck it. You can actually over clock Skylake CPUs quite a bit with proper cooling. I believe the record for the i3 is 5.0 ghrz but from research o n air cooling alone 3.7 on an i5 6400 is stable on liquid cooling you can do a stable oc to 4.5 easy. I just settled on the 6500 because it meets my needs now and I can oc it latter when it starts to lag a little behind if I want or just upgrade it to kabylake or cannon if it stays on the same chip set.
