I have Windows 7 professional and need to be connected to a domain for a software installation. However, I am connected to WORKGROUP. There is no option I can find where I can connect to a domain. Oracle needs a domain name for host name resolution. I have an Ethernet LAN with 2 pc's and a laptop hooked up. Any suggestion will be welcome. Thank you.

  1. In order to connect to a domain you need to speak to a domain administrator, which is your IT support team. We can't help you.
  2. I am inclined to agree with bicycle_repair_man here as this question somewhat does not make sense.

The software is asking you for access to a domain, and if so what domain is it asking for? What software is this? Is this a work related piece of software, because if so you need to speak to your IT team to be given VPN access on the PC you are looking to install to.

Otherwise we really can't help you.
  3. My software installation asks for a FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain Name) resolution, which includes a domain name. Which means that I need a server (which I am not going to do) or an Active Directory to create a domain. Domains are like mydomain.com. I am going another route. Thanks all for reading and responding.

What software is it and why does it ask for it?
  5. The software is Oracle Database and Oracle Fusion Middleware and need a FQDN because the software is deployed to the internet. For development purposes, you deploy to the development site, that is your own pc. Oracle is big on Host name Resolution. You have to install a loopback adapter and disable DHCP for Oracle to display a Form on your own browser. nslookup hostname has to show a valid domain name, according to the prerequisites. There must be other developers around the world with the same problem. I just need to dig deeper.

Ok now this makes a lot more sense and is fine based on our rules. I was a sysadmin of an Oracle EPM system however I do not know how to get this working for you and I actually suspect this isn't the best place to ask, there are very few of us here. Oracle and SAP are always good for these goofy configuration things. I would suggest going straight to the horses mouth (Oracle) for support or any one of the many Oracle based forums online. I just don't think you are going to find anyone here that has the knowledge to help you. Sorry.
  7. Thank you. I visited and implemented MOS (My Oracle Support) SR (Service Requests) solutions but to no avail. It all came down to the Host name Resolution combined with the out-of-date shipped JDK version and updated IE. I asked Experts Exchange, they gave me the same answer. I asked on Oracle Forms forums, the same answer. I asked about everywhere. Finally I gave up on the release I wanted to implement , downloaded a newer Oracle version and trying from scratch. But thank you for your time. Regards.
