Specs:

  • Intel Core i7-5930 K
    Asus Rampage V Extreme
    MSI Radeon R9 380 Gaming 4G
    Corsair Dominator Platinum, 32GB (4x8GB) @ 2133MHz default
    Corsair H80i (liquid CPU cooler)
    Corsair AX1200i PSU
    Samsung 850 Pro 256GB
WD 1TB hard drive that I don't currently use

Everything except for the GPU I bought well over a year ago. I've been noticing the problems below for a long time, but I've only decided now to actively seek out help for it.

Every once in awhile, when I try to turn on the computer, the motherboard lights/RAM lights/fans will turn on, but it will turn off after ~5 seconds. After waiting for a few more seconds, it'll ty to turn on again, with the same exact result. Note that there is NO ISB or HDMI output during this time. Holding the power button for 3 seconds during the "on" pet of the cycle will turn it off, but turning it on again presents the same issue. I have found 3 ways that allow you to get out of this cycle:

  • Spam the delete key (to get into BIOS) -- full video output. BIOS "Overclocking failed!" Error is presented.
Turn it off, the. Switch off the PSU -- after waiting ~5 seconds for all the lights to go out (and NOT before that point) and then turning it on again presents the BIOS error "Overclocking failed!".
Clear the CMOS -- I hate doing this, but it works. The RVE has a convenient little button in the back for this.

About my Overclocking:

  • CPU "turbo boost" clock is set to 4182MHz by the EZ Tuning Wizard (up from the 5930K's default 3700MHz
DRAM Frequency is set to 2488MHz, up from the default 2133MHz
    Cache frequency: 3060MHz
    DMI/PEG: 102MHz

Note: All fans are controlled by Qfan (including the CPU fan... 'm still not a fan of Corsair Link)

Did j just lose the silicon lottery, or is something else going on?
Thanks!

Ive used EZ tune on two different Asus board, guess i never noticed the ram speed changing. But then i always manually set my ram speeds.

I would manually set your ram to default speeds as timings and then OC your CPU. Ether that or up your dram and qpi voltage just a little to help stabilize the ram at the higher speed.

The overclock failed just says that something OC'd has failed, so it could be the ram or cpu, you will have to narrow it down by making on of them the default speed.

Might also try since its moving past the default ram speed is moving them for 15-15-15 to 16-16-16 timings
The on and off cycle is asus's way of telling you your overclock failed. normally a quick power cycle with the power button will boot the computer and force you into the bios.

The EZ tuning shouldnt overclock your ram unless your doing it by yourself, EZ tune should only be changing voltage and the multiplier for the cpu. I would set your ram back to stock settings and see what happens.
