the pc i use now i got at the start of 2011. an i7 950 with 6 GB and a gtx 570. as someone who spends his time gaming i think its time for an upgrade, um.... yeah,

my uses are a lot of gaming, a little streaming and only a little video rendering.

anyway to my point:
i know i am getting the gtx 1080 not sure if i go SLI or just one to start with.
my first question would be not what is the best CPU is but more precisely what is the best CPU / MB that wont hinder the 1080 and rather compliment it in performance when gaming?

Solution
For 4k the 1080 is definitely in order. As long as you stick to two way SLI for the 1080 (most efficient), you won't need to hop over to X99 any time soon, unless of course you want to.
The i7 6700 is a great processor, and a motherboard will never hinder a GPU, unless running a bad PCIe spec. You COULD go for an i5 6500, but I still recommend the i7 since it's only $60-80 more and has a lot better rendering/streaming performance. What resolution are you gaming at? If 1080p, then the 1080 is completely OVERKILL for that, and you could just get a 1060.

I had this exact same set up from the end of 2010. I updated to a GTX 970 and the only game I played (the only major ones I haven't played are GTA V, most MMOs, and the new DOOM) that I wasn't able to play at high to max settings at 60fps+ on a 1080p monitor using the i7 950 was Fallout 4. This game is fairly demanding on RAM and CPU.

Last weekend I switched to a i7 6700k and the difference in some of the games are noticeably smoother, as if frametimes got better. Witcher 3, Fallout 4 and even Fallout New Vegas all saw improvements just from the new chip, RAM and MOBO. I still have the gtx 970 and you can find one for under 200 if you look on Jet or Newegg.

A Haswell, Haswell-E, Broadwell-E or Skylake i7 will be good for the next 3-5+ years for gaming and will not bottleneck the 1080 any. If you're upgrade cycle is like mine (4-6 years), stick with the i7's.

If you are looking for a full upgrade, I would recommend waiting for Zen and what that might do later in the year to prices. I got fed up and just bit the bullet and spent 850 USD for a new system (Ram, Chip, MOBO, Windows 10, Liquid Cooler) and kept what I had. It's been fine and I've been eyeing the 1080 as a final 1080p 60-144 fps solution for the next 4 years.

My first question is: What monitor/s are you using, and will you upgrade to faster or high rez display/s fairly soon?
As has been said, a '1080 is massive overkill for a single 1080 60Hz display, I suspect your current system with a GTX1060 or RX480 could play most games out there at, or around 60 FPS.

1080p @ 60Hz - RX 480 FPD king/1060 1080p @ 144Hz 1070 1440p @ 60/144 Hz - 1080/1080s in SLI I'd recommend if you are purely gaming the i5 6500/6600/6600K is the cheapest and best choice. If you were wanting to get into editing, rendering and 3D projects you will want the i7 6700(K).

well, as far as display goes i am also going large with a 4k and eventually in the future to come several side monitors so the overkill would be my spending not the GPU lol.
as far as prices go, i am not on a budget so i don't mind a little extra on the spending. the only things i am not looking at are those processors with the X at the end. now THAT is an overkill.

the only reason for me to to wait for Zen is if the prices would change drastically which i am not sure would happen.
i mostly game but i do want it to handle other things too and the cycle is 4-6 years. so an i7 is a definite.

well that helps me decide if to get 2 way SLI so thank you for that.

on the main concern, thinking of a PC that would be great for the next 5 years (give or take) without touching it too much wouldn't it be more beneficial to go x99 from the start? (just thinking out loud).
