Hello everyone,

This is my first time building a PC and I want to make ensure I get everything right.

I do not want to purchase an optical drive as I will most likely never use it. But it seems that the hardware of the PC comes with a DVD to get the hardware going. Is there a way to install the drivers of the motherboard and the GPU without an optical drive? Is there any website that shows the process step by step?

I have also read that one should not install the drivers that the hardware comes with because they are outdated and instead should download them directly from the manufacturers website. Is that true?

Thank you!

Manufacturer downloaded drivers are best, usually those discs have been produced months prior and hence have old drivers.

You do not need a DVD drive if you can make yourself or get yourself a Windows bootable USB to install from, and you download the drivers you need for your hardware beforehand, also to a USB drive.

Windows 10 comes on a Bootable USB drive, so one the pc is built, load windows, and from there you'll be able to dl any updates or motherboard software from the manufacturers websites. This is getting to be common practice, especially with the advent of cases that do not have a drive Bay for an optical device. Worst case scenario, ask around your friends, someone will have an external optical drive you could borrow.

Thanks a lot everyone, that helps a lot!

I definitely see no reason to get an optical drive.

I do know that Windows comes in a usb, but I was worried about how to go about updating the rest of the hardware.

How do you know which of the drivers to dowload? Do you download all of them or do you download the most recent version? Does the manufacturer tell you?

Pardon my ignorance.
