Upgrade from GTX 670 to 970 worth it?

I would like to upgrade my videocard. Currently I have an Nvidia 670 GTX 2GB it is a sweet card, but I would like to get another card, I have eyed the 970 as the prices have gone down and I think my power supply can handle it as it can handle the 670 GTX (which requires 550 watts and the 970 requires 600 watts.)

However, I see the benchmarks for both cards to be not that different which is off considering the difference between generations. I am not worried about using VR with this machine, but I would like to run some games at max settings while I still can before needing to replace the whole machine.

can you afford a 1070/1060? what is your exact psu?
and looking at your rig in your signature a 970 is a good cpu but a new cpu may not be a bad idea as a 2600k is a old cpu and if you cant overclock it well very much worth the upgrade

I am not sure of the pricing where you are, but I would be looking at a 1060 instead. Outperfoms the 970 and has lower power consumption.
In my country the 970 is the same price if not more expensive then some of the 1060 models.

I agree and disagree with the post above, the 2600k is old but upgrading it without overclocking or at the very least trying to is a complete waste.

Pricewise the 106 appears to be a better option and it is clearly faster. The sales on the 970 are pretty good at the moment and it still does very well @ 1080p

The 970 will match well with your cpu as will the 1060, the only reason to look at the 970 over the 1060 is availability and price... the 970 better be a fair amount less expensive or it is a waste as the 1060 is simply a faster card which offers more support for new features and more video ram which as time goes on can indeed be useful with games even at 1080p.... Not because the ram is required but rather it compensates for very poor programming from what I can tell.

should have worded more clearly i agree with what you said if your cpu only can hit 3.80/3.90ghz stable then a upgrade is a good idea as its a VERY bad overclocking chip but if it hits 4.4-5ghz (if you are SUPER lucky) then keep it or if its somehow beyond 5ghz then sell it for sure to a pro overclocker :p

I stress tested the overclock... I have not pushed it too hard as most games use the GPu anyhow but the overclock is a solid 4.4 and holds it at 4.4
