It's an old toshiba laptop, with these specs:

32bit
Intel dual core t2330 at 1.6 ghz.
1gb of ram

Even though its old it has a big screen and is good for watching movies and browsing the web, and its design is nice for me. Can i switch the HDD with a SSD in this system?
If i can, will it give benefits as it does for a stronger system?

Would a SSD speed up this system? Unequivocally, yes.

Is the performance gained worth the expense? Arguably, no.

If the system is working well now, I would suggest leaving well enough alone and save the money for a SSD for a future system upgrade altogether.

Adding memory, as ss202sl suggested would likely do more to improve the system. However, older memory like used in those systems is not cheap (compared to newer memory standards).

Well yes, but not the benefits you would get in a modern PC. Your laptop has (most likely) SATA 2 drive interface which maxes out at a read speed of about 350MBs, so your SSD will be capped at or somewhere below that number, on a modern system with SATA 3 most ssd's are capable of 500MBs or better. But this is still a large improvement as the 7200rpm hard drive or possibly 5400rpm sits around the 100MBs. So an SSD should make the system boost faster, have apps open faster, and just feel all around more responsive. However this is an 8 year old computer with a gig of ram, I have never tried an ssd in a computer that old with those kind of specs I cant be certain it will perform notiably better if its already being held back by something else.

Wanted to post back, ive put a 120 gb ssd in, and its like the laptop is reborn.
Also 1gb of memory was added, so now it's 2.
Its 32bit so it doesnt need as much memory as 64 bit.
Sure, it lags sometimes when using a lot of stuff a the same time but web browsing, music, application load time was worth the 35e SSSD upgrade.
Before it was almost unusable which was a shame, because even though its old, its a laptop with a very beautiful design, a big screen with good resolution, has bluetooth, card reader, camera, perfect keyboard. So at my end, the upgrade was totally worth it.
