Hey Guys,

I'm looking for a spot of advice regarding the placement of fans inside my Fractal R5 with the Corsair H80i V2 CPU cooler. I'm looking to run a cool but quiet system based on Broadwell-E. The R5 comes with 2 140mm fans and i was planning to purchase an additional one along with the case. So my question is, what will the best placement of the fans be for good cooling and low noise?

My current plan is to have the H80i acting as an exhaust at the rear of the case and have two 140's as intake at the front. I'm unsure what to do with the third 140, my thoughts currently are have it as an additional intake on the side, or have it as an exhaust on the top of the case.

In addition, i'm not planing to use the fan controller, instead having the fan's speed controlled by the motherboard to try and aid with noise (obviously with the pump having full power at all times).

Many Thanks!

Hi Rob,

Sorry you didn't seem to get any replies.

I'm running an H80i GT with Cougar Vortex HDB fans as an exhaust (push/pull) in an R5 case. This really is all the exhaust you need unless you're doing extreme OC'ing - which the H80i isn't really made for. My other Cougar 140mm fans are intakes from front (2x, with drive bays removed) and one below blowing onto the GPU - I don't recommend this if your PC is on carpet, although it shouldn't be on carpet anyway .

Adding another exhaust probably won't create negative pressure in the case, but you'll benefit more using it as an intake on the side or bottom rather than as an exhaust on the top, I got better temps with this config. Also, the R5 is designed to be silent and you'll undo...

So i think i have decided to have one fractal 140mm on the front and one on the side as intake. Then one on the rear roof and the H80i V2 as exhaust. Does this seem like a sensible solution? Or should i have the third 140MM as an additional intake on the front, leaving the H80 as the sole exhaust?

I hope that helps!

Hi SullenGuide,

Many thanks for your response. I now have the system assembled and have used the two included fans as intake on the front, with the H80i V2 as an exhaust on the rear. In addition, I purchased an additional 140mm Noctua to intake at the side. Overall I couldn't be more pleased with the setup! The system is quiet and very cool.
