I have the i5 6600 and was wondering if I'll see any improvements if I go to the i7 6700. I built this system a few months back and sometimes I feel it could be faster. Of course, I know that speed is dependent on the number of online users at the moment but again... maybe?

First of all you can pretty much have a look at the differences on Intel's website:

http://ark.intel.com/es/compare/88188,88196

The i7 has integrated options available

The i7 has hyperthreading

The i7 has 2 extra MB of L3 cache

The i7 runs 100mhz faster regardless of the # of active cores (3.7 with 4 core, 3.8 with 3C, 3.9 with 2C and 4 with 1C compared to 3.6, 3.7, 3.8 and 3.9 ghz on the i5)

So basically it depends of what you are going to be doing with your PC

If you plan to use adobe premier, vegas, or any multithreaded aplication for 3D modeling, editing, encoding, etc go for the i7 due to those tasks DO benefit from hyperthreading and the extra cache

Gaming wise, the i5 performs roughly the same as an i7 then get and i5...

If your gaming performance is low, a new Graphics Card is probably needed. What GPU do you currently have?

The 6600 is the best i5 out (that can't be overclocked) at the moment. You shouldn't see any issues with it. An i7 will only benefit in things such as rendering and heavy multi-tasking like streaming. Gaming performance is virtually the same.

An SSD with your OS installed will also make things more speedy and make programs run faster if they are installed on it.

I'm running an Asus GTX 680 video card. My question was hypothetical so see if I could improve on the i5 6600. From your responses I can see there is no advantage on going to the i7 6700. Byw, I'm not looking to switch mb.

Gaming wise, the i5 performs roughly the same as an i7 then get and i5 which is cheaper and invest more on your GPU. Games DO NOT benefit much from hyperthreading and the differences in clock speeds are minimal

Hope to have answered your question

So it leads us to say that it depends on the tasks you're going to be performing

If you plan to play games just get the i5 if you plan to do any task regarding content creation then go for i7

The 680 is pretty decent, but you will certainly see a big improvement in games if you got something like a GTX 1060 as its performance is nearly the same as a 980 which is 2 gens newer than your 680

the 680 is a little faster than a 960 with less vram and a older architecture

Yeah, if the OP wants more gaming performance he should be looking at a 1060 it offers something like a 60-70% increase over the 960. (50% in most titles)
