Is my CPU scratched?

I recently had some trouble with my motherboard but managed to get it replaced. I hooked everything up to the new board and tried to start it up but was unsuccessful. The fans, CPU cooler and LEDs would power up but everything would shut down again a few seconds later, except for the motherboard's flashing Audio LEDs. My monitor says it is not receiving a DVI display. I investigated everything and came to the conclusion that either my RAM or CPU was the problem now.

I noticed a few minor scratches on my CPU and I am wondering if this is the problem. When I say minor, I mean there are 2 or 3 questionable spots on the gold pins that can only be seen with a bright flashlight and the right viewing angle, as the marks are unnoticeable from a top-down view. Are they a problem or could it be my RAM? Pictures are attached. Thanks.

Unless the scratches have gone through the gold plating on the pads and the pads' copper itself, they shouldn't matter and from the top-down picture, that does not appear to be the case here.

As mez said, if something isn't working, it isn't due to the scratches. You may want to examine your motherboard's socket for bent or odd-looking fingers - those would be the ones responsible for any abnormal scratching.

Few pictures of the motherboard pins. I see nothing wrong with them and like I said, it is a brand new board that just came today. If you think the CPU is fine, then I am looking at the RAM now. I have 2 x 8 GB DDR4 2400 and both sticks in any of my four RAM slots cause the same thing to happen, which is boot and shut down.

Take the RAM out and turn on the PC. If it stays on, maybe with 3 beeps if you have your speaker connected, then it could be the RAM that's the problem. If it still turns off after a few secs then that could be motherboard or CPU related.

It's rare for a CPU to die, bit a failing mobo can kill it.

I took the RAM out and tried starting it. I got the beeps and the DRAM LED lit up but sure enough, it all shut off. Should I be considering returning my CPU to Microcenter now? Definitely still within 15 days since I bought it.

2 other things. Wheb ram is in the slot, the red DRAM LED remains on until the computer shuts off a few seconds later. Additionally, the only way to start the motherboard is to jump it and turn on the PSU. The power switch cable from the case doesn't seem to work no matter how it is plugged in.

Should I buy and try another RAM unit?
