Hello everyone! This is my 1st post here. I want to replace my gtx 770 and I've decided to go big time with 1080.
I have found a Gigabyte 1080 FE for 590eur. Seems like an awesome deal, getting it from Germany, since the prices here in Serbia are 850+. But what makes me hesitate are reports u that FE cards have some issues with fans and thermal throttling. Is it true? Has it been fixed?
Should i add some extra cash and get non reference design? The closest one on the budget is Galax/Kfa2 1080 EXOC for 669, followed by Inno3ed for 699.
Please help :)

I would go with the FE version at that price. I had a 1080 FE for a few weeks before getting a aftermarket cooled card. At 1440p 60hz with vsync on I didn't have much trouble with heat on the FE card. I imagine if you wanted to run 144hz you might different results. My tower sits on my desk a few feet away from me so noisy fan would be pretty obvious. I don't think the either the FE or the aftermarket cards any noisy.

The FE card was over clocked to 2050 and temps would rise to 82c with the boost clock settling at 1911. The fan would run in the 60% range and was pretty quiet. Anything under 70% fan speed wasn't terribly loud, you could hear air moving but it wasn't annoying. The reviews seem to indicate under load the fan runs at 42db...

If FE is actually cheaper than go for it, in the US it's more expensive which it shouldn't be but it is. You'll have to use a higher fan profile to keep temps down which just means it'll be louder, so you have to ask yourself how important that is.

A custom GPU will get lower temps at quieter levels which why everyone prefers them.

Thanks! Its pretty much on pair with prices with non reference, but some of the non reference get up to 800eur+. This 1080 FE that I'd buy is from a guy that got it as present, bought from Amazon a week + ago, its unused and in original box, he would give me the bill and 2 year warranty that came with it. He says its incompatible with his pc.
How much louder would it be? I don't mind if its a bit louder, but if it does some crazy stuff like some people reported it does, like jumping almost 3000 rpm for no reason, then its prob :)

Yeah, but its just that this way i get it for 590, otherwise its 700+ and for some 800+, for both FE and non reference. The cheapest one is from Galax for 669. But if cooling and fan issues are that bad with FE, i guess i should squeeze more cash for non reference then?

I used the stock fan profile and the weird fan speed issue you mentioned was fixed early on with a driver update.

The evga sc card is also overclocked to 2050 and temps range between 75 to 77 with the boost clock settling to 2000. The fan runs just under 50% and is basically silent.

I have no issue with FE if it's the cheapest option by a good bit which it sounds like it is for you. My current 3 fan 780ti I don't mind at 100% but my previous 670 had a blower style cooler and the loudest I could take was about 72% but it did get a good max oc with decent temps.
