My coworker is buliding a PC.

It will be used for programming and some simple MAYA (3d modeling) work. He doesn't game very often. So does not need anything crazy. Budget is 1000 dollars.

This is what he came up with:

Looking to improve it. Any suggestions welcome.

It is a very quality build. If you are looking to save some money for the nearly the same performance & quality, here is what I think:

1) He can probably get away with a Gigabyte Z170 board and GTX 960.

2) The Asus SABERTOOTH Z170 and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 are a bit overkill. If he is working from home/home office and run the computer 10 hours day/6 days week then I guess it would be worth it in long run.

3) Seagate is notorious among professional photographers/videographers. And avoid the 3TB model like plague. If this is a work computer I would get the Gigabyte Z170 board and GTX 960, save $150 for a WD black 2 TB harddrive.

4) here is what I would suggest if you are looking for more value for money ($211 saving plus another...

Budget-wise you save $311 ($1461 vs $1100) and performance-wise you are not losing much.
