CPU Too Hot?

I recently built a new PC. I have the ASUS x99-A/3.1 USB Mobo and the i7-6800k Processor. After building, I looked at the temp in the BIOS it was steadily increasing from 70 and up. I decided to install windows after this and download Afterburner. It shows me now that its 50-60C idle. Then I started gaming. It peeks up to 100C. I'm not sure what I did wrong here. I have an Hyper EVO 212 as my cooler and I'm not overclocking at the moment. What could be my problem here?

Also, it barely has usage. Only 40% is being used when I'm playing a game. Why is it heating up so much?

Solution
check in the bios that you have the newest bios and that the cpu not overclocked or over voltages. in the fan speed info if the fan is max speed and 50c. make sure the cpu fan plug on the cpu and not cpu opt port. on the cooler did you remove the plastic film covering the thermal paste. on the cooler it self it the center pin in the heat sink right so the cooler is touching the cpu chip.

it is probably with your thermal paste. wipe it off and reapply, make sure you have a very thin coat that's just enough to cover everything. Then make sure your cooler has great contact and is down all the way. If you know you did that perfect than idk?

1. When in BIOS, no power saving features are engaged so it's not the place where ya wanna measure temps.

2. This temps are high for an idle speed tho hard to say w/o knowing ambient temps.

3. The Hyper 212 is way outta place on a X99 system.... while is a "great low budget cooler", it is far from being a "great cooler". That being said, you should not be seeing 100C.

Possible causes (things I have seen):

a) Poor mount, inadequate or uneven contact.

b) Forgot to apply thermal paste

c) Forgot to remove plastic strip / tape on cooler

Things I'd consider:

a) Replace cooler to something more appropriate to your system build. The 212 is something we generally stop using when system budget exceeds $850

b) Remove cooler, clean all surfaces with > 90% isoprophyl alcohol and reapply thermal paste

c) Install cooler in accordance with manufacturer's instructions with regard to tightening hold down screws.

d) Test install using RoG Real Bench and HWiNFO (sensors only) to monitor core temps.

Thanks everyone. It was due to me not using the right screws for the cooler. I used the taller ones instead of the shorter ones. I've fixed the problem.
