Alright guys, I've literally scoured the internet for any solutions to no avail.

There's ONE guy with a similar issue as me found here: guy with same issue but I don't think he's found a solution or has not posted it.

_____________

So I've recently built a new PC, running on Windows 10. I ordered most/all my parts through Amazon, and the couriers have consistently thrown the parts over, even with service calls to the delivery manager(s). I started off with a tonne of issues, and pretty much re-bought all my parts that are kind of fragile (learned that the PSU was defective even though it would jump start, etc.)

When the bad boy finally POSTed and I set up Windows 10 on it, I learned that the microphone wasn't working. Windows detected it but it simply wouldn't pick up sound.

Before you guys reply to troubleshoot particular things, this issue started when I had a MSI H170A PC Mate (new), and I've since replaced it with a Gigabyte Z170MX Gaming 5. I have worked with computers extensively before and am aware of all the common troubleshooting routes. I've reinstalled all drivers, updated, tried every BIOS version, resetted CMOS, reinstalled Windows 10 (clean) today, and even bought a USB sound adapter Sabrent Sound Adapter

TL;DR:

Microphone(s) do not work. Works on every computer. Tried every common troubleshooting route. Bought a new motherboard with a nice sound-set, still with the same issue. Reinstalled Windows 10 CLEAN. Bought a USB sound adapter, still to no avail.

SIDE NOTE: When I plug it in, it will pick up sound for 0.05 seconds or so (or unplug/replug) - as I can see the volume bar moving up. Almost certain that this is static sound. Also, if I am to listen to the microphone at full volume on playback, I can hear faint static sounds. Windows realizes somethings connected, either via back panel, front panel -or- USB adapter, but still no input.

Please, if anyone has any information apart from "go to a PC shop" - that would be awesome. I am also aware that (with my luck), I could have had two motherboards with broken sound cards - but the purchase of the USB sound adapter makes me think otherwise. EVERYTHING works on other devices.

Out of curiosity, is your headset digital (like digital digital) with sound processing in the headset, or (as I am guessing) standard digital with wires in and out? (In the slight chance it's the former you can reset the headphones because they keep a small cache of non-volatile memory for systems used, which can really screw with people)

One way to narrow this down is to determine if the issue is hardware or software based. Using Windows, create a live USB or CD of some linux distribution or another; Debian's live image is fairly lightweight - https://www.debian.org/CD/live/. From there, plug in headset and see if it works. I have an outdated Ubuntu live USB laying around for just this purpose (and also to look kool if my dev friend comes over lel).

Alright, when I get home from the dentist I'll check whether it's a hardware or software issue and make a ego boosting USB as well :pt1cable:

As for my microphone, I've tried two different ones, the default iPhone earphones (which work on other PCs both Windows and OS X) and a studio microphone, which I do not remember the model from the top of my head (doh).

Also, how do you reset or clear the cache of particular headsets or microphones?

On my Logitech ones there is a detachable side panel with a reset button in it, I have no idea where it would be on any others, I have just heard of it being a problem after looking up some issues I had (mostly to do with the headphones variable resistor having to do with auto-headphone detection in computers not activating). However, if it is happening with more than one set of headphones, it likely does not have anything to do with that.

Have you tried checking Device Manager?

So I tried installing Ubuntu and ran into a partition issue, and almost in a strange fit of frustration, unplugged my studio mic and plugged my apple earphones - nearly fainted when I saw the volume bar move back up after the split second. IT FIXED ITSELF. LITERALLY. I have no idea how or why, I've done nothing special or extra. I'm leaving it plugged in and PC on forever LOL (sorry for the excessive caps, I'm so ecstatic!)
