I live in a small building with free wifi shared by three other tenants, I would like to have my own protected wifi that would connect to this so I can access the internet and share files and devices (eg smart tv) without sharing them with everyone in the building. I do not have physical access to the building's wifi router. Is there a way to connect my own router to the building's wifi and then broadcast my own pw-protected wifi that only I could connect to?

Since you have no access to the main router to set up another subnet with a router of your own, my only suggestion assuming that you run a Windows OS would be to add a second wireless adapter (USB would be fine). The second adapter can be run in ad hoc mode and the main adapter that gets the Internet can share it through Internet connection sharing (ICS) enabled on the main adapter.

While not as flexible as your own router, it would be a separate subnet on a different channel with your own security. The downside is that your computer with two adapters must be left on to make the connection.

Using the program Connectify makes if much easier to manage the network, but it is not freeware.

Since I am new to this forum, please explain why any other suggestion would be a "Hack". I am not stealing WIFI. We live above a cafe that offers free WIFI and the landlord has said we may use the cafe's WIFI. I'm just looking for a way for my own devices and files to NOT show up on the shared network but still be able to share them within my own apt. Seems like a reasonable thing to do. Thanks for explaining and hopefully offering a solution.

@SophiaAndBen: Apologies. Did not mean to offend but there is really no way to know the true situation. You having no access to the main router was the basis for my concerns.

However, that is all moot as RealBeast (Moderator) has addressed and answered your post. My thanks accordingly.
