Can you mix RAM capacities in different lanes/slots.

To put things into context I have an x99 board, which enables me to put up to 8 sticks of ram into the different dimm slots (you probably know that already). When I started, I put my first 4x4GB set into the PC leaving 4 additional slots free. What I'm planning to do is buy the same RAM (speed and manufacturer), but at a different capacity.
So the question is, do I have to get another 4x4GB set or can I add 2x8GB, so I can add another 2x8GB sticks later on(giving me a 4x4GB sticks & 4x8GB sticks on the mobo - bear in mind, this isn't dual channel but quad channel). Thanks.

You can, but the way it works is that the first 16GB would be in quad channel and the next 16GB would be in dual channel.

I'd suggest buying 4x8GB now so you have 48GB in quad channel.

Also note sometimes certain DIMMs are incompatible with other ones. An obvious solution is a 4x8GB set as your only RAM or a 4x16GB set. SR-71 points this effect out, but IIRC it happens ~3% of the time. Figure out what odds you're willing to accept and compare it to 3%. Also note you can return a set that isn't compatible depending on the retailer.
