How do I configure an MSI z170A PC Mate to recognize a CD/DVD Writer as the initial boot disk?

I have an MSI z170A PC Mate mobo. I'm using a Samsung 950 Pro SSD. System recognizes the SSD. But I also have a SATA CD/DVD writer that is not recognized. The manual isn't very clear about how to connect the writer. It seems to be saying that if there is an M.2 type drive then one can't connect to SATA1 or SATA2 on the mobo. IF that is the case, shouldn't I be able to connect to either SATA3, 4, 5 or 6 and have the writer recognized?

Second, how do I configure the writer (in the mobo set up section), which is an old Plextor px-755SA so that it's bootable? (That is, is it a UEFI device, or just a standard CD/DVD?)

thanks,

If it is a SATA device, it should show up in the boot order in UEFI (BIOS). Make it first. You do that in UEFI on the main screen. Simply use your mouse to slide the devices into the order you want them to boot in. (pg. 38 in the manual)
If you only need to boot from it this one time, you can tap F11 at boot to get the boot device selection screen.
