Motherboard bottlenecks RAM??

My specs:

intel i5 6600 processor
GIGABYTE H110M-DS2 motherboard
CORSAIR VENGEANCE 8 GB 2400 MHz DDR4 memory

I run AIDA64 cache and memory benchmark and get the following scores
Memory read - 16,471 MB/s
Memory write - 15,979 MB/s
Memory copy - 15,797 MB/s
Memory latency - 65.5 ns

Scores vary slightly with every run (I know it's normal). These are the typical values I get.
My RAM runs in "single channel" mode at 2133 MHz as my motherboard supports only 2133 MHz memory

My questions:
1)Is my motherboard bottlenecking my memory performance?
2)Are these scores normal?
3)Will adding another RAM and using in "dual channel mode" improve my scores?
4)How much will this impact my gaming performance if I pair my i5-6600 with a GTX 1060?

Solution

Dual-channel vs Single-channel isn't the crippling thing it once was. Bandwidth on DDR4 has had a huge improvement, you are likely not to notice it at all. I'm not sure on specifics, but you are looking at a 5-8% increase in memory performance. 8GB should be fine, but 16GB would be more futureproof. It really depends on what you are doing...

1. no most likely not
2. for single channel mode yes they are
3. yes adding another stick will nearly double some scores for your ram by doubling the available bus width as dual channel is supposed to do (one channel 64bit...2 channels 128bit) aka around 7-10% increase in reality. As for the ram speed...the memory controller is actually on your CPU not the motherboard. If you want faster ram speeds you need to overclock our cpu's memory controller accordingly assuming your motherboard allows some overclocking ;) hope that helps
4. depending on the game a fair bit. always run dual channel (or what ever the native channels are 2, 3 or 4 depending on CPU type) for gaming if you want the best performance.

1) Check your motherboard manual. Sometimes you need to enable the XMP profile, or adjust the UEFI settings to reach the stock speeds. If it supports those speeds (It should it's DDR4), then you should be good here. You have pretty standard DDR4 memory, so it should be working fine OOB.

2) Idk, probably. If it's at the right speed it should be. Do you know if they are not? I'd get an expert, not me.

3) Yes, around 5-8% better bandwidth, although it's not so much an issue with DDR4. Use 2 or more sticks to enable dual-channel.

4) RAM has little to no performance impact on games, if you have enough for the game it should be OK. RAM only impacts loading data from the hard drive, so if you have a bigger game, it will impact loading times, and if it is an infinite world type scenario, like Minecraft, it will impact fps to a degree.

as i said your speeds are about right. maybe a hair low but not by much. try decreasing your timings to increase bandwidth and reduce latency. also read this...

running with and without dual channel. might help also has some benchmarks.

as related to gaming dual and single channel...

That shouldn't matter too much, but I just re-looked at your post, and realised your mobo has down-clocked your RAM, whilst I never recommend H110 chipsets, there should be something in the BIOS to set your RAM speed. If not, you're not looking at much of a performance decrease anyway. I wouldn't worry :)

I was tight on the budget and so I had to choose the H110 motherboard. I felt that the motherboard was where I could save a few bucks without a performance hit. By the way, I too know that 2133 MHz and 2400 MHz don't make much difference.

I see that in the above answers, it is mentioned that adding another RAM in dual channel mode will give some 5 to 10 percent increase in bandwidth.

Does it mean that I will get scores of in the range 17,000 to 18,000 MB/s from my current scores of around 16,000 MB/s??

If so, I don't think it is a significant improvement.

Also, will I need 16 GB RAM or will I be okay with my current 8 GB??

RAM is much cheaper than it once was, so I would go with 16GB if you can.
