I was wondering what is the best LGA 771 CPU?

I want to put a modding kit on it to have the best CPU for the MSI P35 Platinum.

The motherboard is an LGA 775 socket but everyone says that if you use a mod kit on it, it will be a lot cheaper and you will have better performance.

The best CPU that fits in that motherboard is a Core 2 Extreme QX9770 but I'm pretty sure that there is an LGA 771 Xeon CPU that is better then the core 2 extreme.

Yeah, I mean stuff like craigslist or Ebay. I'd go for the SLI option. Up until the 480x, crossfire doesn't scale as well as SLi. A 680 is a pretty cost effectice solution for a GPU. I got mine for around 100 USD. The Phenom should suit you well until you trade-up. It's still the same performance as a FX-6350

It depends what you are doing. Xeons are preferable because they are cheaper, not because they are more powerful. Also, the 771 Sticker doesnt automaticially mean that the Xeon will work on your motherboard, you need to lookup what other people have done with the board before you buy.

Check this out: http://www.delidded.com/lga-771-to-775-adapter/2/#motherboard-compatibility but it does look like you should be OK.

The best Xeon would be a X3492 with 12MB cache and 3.4GHz base clock.

Yes, but not by a lot. Just about 200MHz, but it will be faster :p I would reccommend a faster CPU for modern games at 1080p, but if you are determined to go to this platform, keeping in mind there is no upgrade path, I see no problem. It should run games like CSGO no problem, if thats any comparison.

Well do you know a different platform CPU that I can get?

I will need a different motherboard then.

I can't spend more than about 100$.

I have about 150$ to spend on the motherboard, CPU, wifi card and ram.

This is all Canadian currency.

I would look into the secondhand market. I got my Phenom with a motherboard case, and hard drive for only 140 New Zealand Pesos. Thats around 70 USD. It's a different market here, but I would look for at least a 1st gen i7 or a 2nd gen i5. It will last you for a lot longer. It's probably a lot cheaper in Canada. You can also get cheap 1366 Xeons, which overclock very well. I'd check this out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epIlB49SNTI Linus has a nice video on stuff like this.

in Canada where I live, there is like 2 places that repair computers and they are crap places.

The goal is to start on a low end build and work my way up to my dream computer.

Right now my computer has a Core 2 Duo E8400 with 1 gig of ram and a gts 250.

I think I am going to get a Phenom ii x6 1100T with either a FOXCONN A7DA-S or an MSI NF750-G55.

It is cheaper than the Core 2 extreme qx9770 and it is more powerful.

The MSI board has Crossfire and the Foxxcon board has SLI.
