Hey all

I am looking into upgrading my rig with a new graphic card but I am not sure if my rig is suitable for an upgrade. Further, I am pondering whether to get the 1070 or the 1080 and if it is worth it. Ideally I would like to play in 1440p as my main monitor have that resolution. I normally play strategy, rpgs and simulations. Nearly all my fps are played on console so FPS is not really that much of a concern as long as it is stable around 40-60. Preferably with plenty of eye candy in games like Warhammer Total War, Witcher 3 and such.

  • Type Item
    CPU Intel Core i5-4570 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor
Motherboard Asus H81I-PLUS Mini ITX LGA1150 Motherboard
    Memory Kingston HyperX Fury Blue 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
Storage Samsung 840 EVO 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive -
Storage Crucial BX100 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
Video Card Asus GeForce GTX 770 2GB DirectCU II Video Card -
Case Cooler Master Elite 120 Advanced (Black) Mini ITX Tower Case
Power Supply Raidmax 535W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply
Operating System Microsoft Windows 10 Home OEM (64-bit)
    Monitor Dell U2515H 60Hz 25.0" Monitor

So my questions are:

Is the power supply sufficient for either the 1070 or the 1080? (apart from the listed I have a low level samsung monitor and wired mouse/keyboard).
Will my CPU or RAM throttle either GPU performance?
Does the 1080 provide enough bang for the buck improve to warrant its higher price?
Which of the different custom designs best fit a small form factor build concerning temperature and air flow?

Solution
Personally, I won't be upgrading until the next gen of GPUs comes out. I would go for the 1070 if I had your system and needed to upgrade. The card is amazing for 1440 as it runs every game 60+ fps. The CPU would probably bottleneck a 1080 but it should be fine with a 1070 there may be a very slight bottlencek in some games. The PSU should be alright, Pascal is very power efficient and the recommended PSU for a 1070 is 500 watts. You might want to consider getting 16gb of RAM but that's the only thing I would say. So overall, if you want to upgrade I recommend going for the 1070 and in the future maybe get more RAM. Hope this helps.

Yes, good point. Even though 535 watts meets the recommended wattage it would be a disaster if it died..
