Hi I'm going to build my first pc and will be using 16gb of ddr3 ram. The thing is that I see different mhz like 1600,2100 and 2400. Can someone please tell me the differance between them and if I could also mix them together. In going to use 2 4gb sticks of 1600mhz of ddr3. And also 2 4gb sticks of 2400mhz of ddr3. Thank You.

Mixing memory makes/models can have mixed results. Assuming the two pairs of memory will work together, they will likely only do so at the lower rated speed setting (1600mhz). It is also possible that they will only work at the slower 1333mhz setting, reliably.

What are the makes/models of the two pairs of memory you are considering?

BTW, it is always best to use matched memory. Second, the speed rating indicates the rated speed that the memory can be expected to operate up to that speed (like an upper limit rating).

I'm not sure if different frequency RAM works together. I would play it safe and get 2x8gb @2133mhz. Also, if you use up all 4 channels you can't upgrade in the future without selling 2 sticks or just taking them out and you cap out at 16gb. If you use 2 8gb sticks, you can add another 2 8gb sticks in the future and have 32gb of RAM. To answer your question about the difference - the higher the frequency the RAM runs at, the better the performance
