So, I'm about to buy a new internal 5400rpm drive for some much needed extra storage.
The options right now are WD Green 6TB and WD Blue 6TB. The price and specs are exactly the same so which one to buy?

It is my understanding that the WD Green drives have now been rebranded as Blue drives, but is the change of name all there is to it? Are these two drives identical or is there some difference in the tech between these drives that makes one of them the better buy?

Solution

Look for the RPM, or the word 'Intellipower'.
A 5400 RPM drive will be 5400 RPM, no matter what color it is.
Intellipower means it spins down when it feels like (generally when not being used)...

What will you be using this for?
The WD line has been rebranded. Basically, all different flavors of "Blue".

The old WD Green, or its new rebrand, is suitable for backups and mass storage. Video, etc.

Thanks for the link. :)
I'll be using the drive mainly for storing my videofiles. Mainly just for playback and long term storage. I won't be using it for actual video editing though as I have a WD Black that I'm using for that purpose.

Yes, but are there any difference between the drives that makes one the better buy than the other or are the Blue drive literally identical to the Green drive only with a Blue sticker on it? I'm guessing since the Green drives are discontinued that there is a remote chance the Blue drive may have newer tech? Or if there is some kind of difference in reliability, noise or power consumption? I don't know. I guess both will work just fine, but I have a hard time deciding which one to pick.

Intellipower means it spins down when it feels like (generally when not being used). Spins back up when you access it. Maybe a second or two. Critical if playing a game, not even a tiny speedbump when playing a video, or starting a backup.

As far as I can tell, all the retailers still have all sorts in their inventory. Old Blue and Green, new various flavors of Blue.
As said...for that use...either of your linked drives will work. You will not notice a difference.

Both drives are 5400rpm, but for some reason I must have misread 'intelliseek' on the Blue drive and thought that drive also had 'intellipower', but when taking a closer look I see that only the Green drive is listed as having 'intellipower' so I think I'll definitely go with the Green drive then (as I'd prefer the drive to be as silent as possible). Thanks. :)
