I was looking at buying this external DVD drive, when I noticed a strange comment from one buyer. The comment claimed the drive required an unused SATA port to work. Could this be true? Is this the case for all or even many external DVD drives?
Let me clarify. The comment is not claiming that you literally plug the USB DVD drive into the SATA port. The comment is saying when you plug the USB DVD drive into an unused USB port, it creates a bridge to the SATA port. Therefore, if there is no unused SATA port (or no SATA port at all in the case of an IDE system), the drive won't work.
However, there is no mention of this in the Newegg product description. So is:
1) an anonymous Internet comment just making stuff up
2) the Lite-On drive actually a special case that uses a weird uncommon hardware interface
3) all/most modern external USB DVD drives require an unused SATA port (maybe most people don't notice because most people likely have unused SATA ports)
#2 may be supported by the fact that the Lite-On drive only uses one USB male connector, where many external DVD drives use USB cords with two USB male connectors. I thought this was only for power reason, but maybe that is something else to it?
Please let me know your thoughts on this. Soon would be great, since I'm actually trying to buy an external DVD drive right now. Thanks.
