Hi there,
I've currently got a four year old Netgear DGN2200 N300 modem router and I'm starting to experience some serious troubles. I have had a line test done by my ISP, and my modem is receiving speeds of roughly 9 down/1 up, yet speedtests on every device in my house are fetching results like 2 down/0.5 up.

I've updated my modem firmware, tried all the different channel options, and nothing is working. Would investing in a new modem like the Netgear AC1600 one help my problems?

Thanks in advance.

Again, I will tell you you can't get just that speed to ONE and ONLY one computer unless that is the ONLY device connected (Wifi off and nothing else cable in). If one person's cell phone is on, it will connect and check FB messages,. email, updates to the OS, weather, news, every few minutes,.... so you will not achieve 9/1 your happy with. Even at 2AM.

So to see if the Router is the issue, turn off the Wifi, have only your...
Concur. Always do a DIRECT WIRE test and see what you get then work your way 'backwards' to your exact location of your device. As I just posted in another thread, the more devices in your house the more 'splitting' of the speed. Take a REAL accounting of the number of devices, let me give a example:
Mom/Dad + 2 Kids =
4 Cell phones + 2 Game Consoles + 2 Smart TV devices (Netflix/etc. streaming) + 4 Computers + Mom Tablet + .....
Already at 13 devices all splitting 9Mbps all the time... even to 'update checks' or 'patches' or whatever.

More devices, more demand more speed required. The minimum for a 'typical' home is now at least 25Mbps, normally 100Mpbs keeps people from being bitchy at each other.

Just did and it got up to 7 down/0.8 up

My ISP told me that, as well as I went into my router settings through my browser and that provided me with the same stats.

Ok that makes sense. But let's assume that this is the maximum speeds I can get (which is the case), is there a solution? Will a new modem help me get more from my line than I'm currently getting?

Now is this DSL or is this Cable. Because if the TERMS of SERVICE says UPTO XYMbps then ANY speed they give is okay, but if your on a FIXED 'we will provide ZZMpbs' then that is what they need to do and need to come check your line at your house etc.

That would be the first step as you said the Router itself is getting those speeds.

I have ADSL 2+. Not sure what the terms of service say. At the end of the day, I have had in the past consistent speeds around the 8d/1u mark before (and I'd be more than happy with those speeds) and it has slowly deteriorated over the past few months. So I'm more concerned with the mismatch of what the line to the house is giving my router, versus what my router is giving my devices over WiFi

Well you need to check your TOS with the ISP. Else it is all guess work. You can replace your computer, replace the modem, replace replace all premium expensive stuff, don't matter if the ISP is not meeting the TOS your paying for per month.

Let me put it another way. If you buy a high speed car, put it in your Million Dollar garage, and use nothing but premium gas; does all that matter if you have to drive from the driveway to anyplace else on a large potholed mud and dirt filled road? Your still going to be slow, stuck and stuttering, even at 2AM.

Start with the ISP. If that is all perfect as paying for to the side of your house, then look to the router your using next, THEN the wifi, THEN the computer receiving it. That is the steps.

So I checked the TOS and its fine. They say up to "something" (I cant remember what, but I know they're providing what they say. And to clarify, I'm happy with the roughly 9/1 that I'm getting to my modem, I'd just like to receive that on my computer. So the next step is the modem router, but what exactly?

Again, I will tell you you can't get just that speed to ONE and ONLY one computer unless that is the ONLY device connected (Wifi off and nothing else cable in). If one person's cell phone is on, it will connect and check FB messages,. email, updates to the OS, weather, news, every few minutes,.... so you will not achieve 9/1 your happy with. Even at 2AM.

So to see if the Router is the issue, turn off the Wifi, have only your computer WIRED into it, and test. Does it / NOT give you the speed. If it does not, then try a second computer same way and see does it on that second one.

IF YES on 2nd but no on YOURS issue is solely with your computer.
If NO on both, then logic says issue with the Modem. I would first get the manual and do a HARDRESET.
Then test again WIRED. Again same test. IF still NO on both, then the router is failing and should be replaced.

IF your computer does work, and gets speed, then try it wirelessly. Does it still get it with in 5 feet (no closer) to the router? If NO then there is a problem, test with a 2nd WIFI computer. IF YES 2nd but no on YOURS issue is solely with your computer WIFI. If NO on both, then issue is with the WIFI in general.

If WIFI in general, how many other 'wifi' signals do you detect (listed?). If you see ALOT then you need to change the RADIO channel on it and make sure it doesn't say the same name (Neighbor says NetGear, your says Netgear.. OOPS same name!). Then you need to eliminate any other 'interference' near by. Like Oh yeah I sit the Wifi on top of the Monitor/Speaker/etc... OOOPS electrical signal interference. Move it over to by itself...

And so on.. there is many more steps in each little part... but lets see what we can do up to this point to eliminate the suspects.
