Inernet Slowed Down when router is connected

Yes, it's one more of these questions, but I couldn't solve my problem yet.

I used to have an old router, a Linksys wr45g or something like that. But seeing that it was pretty old and my connection was not working well when I had it on, I bought a new one. I bought a TP Link TL841HP I know it's not of the best but for the connection I have (12Mbps) it should work more than fine.

The problem is sometimes the network works at full speed, but generally lately it's been too slow and erratic. Most of the time it works at around 150kb/s download speed (about 1/10 of what it should be). Right now it's at around 5Mbps (http://www.speedtest.net/result/5501306902.png). I'm connected to it by an ethernet cable, not through wi-fi.
Here's another test about 3min after the previous one: http://www.speedtest.net/result/5501313475.png

I've tested the speed with the modem directly, no wi-fi and it works as a charm.

Maybe the configuration is wrong? I honestly don't know what else to do.

Well, try doing the tests on a different computer as it might be an issue with your PC's NIC. But, If you got the same result while being wired to the router, then it's most likely the issue.

Since the issue doesn't occur while connected to the modem, and assuming that the same issue occurred on a different device (while using wired), I'd have to say that the issue is in fact the router.

But just for the heck of it, try hard resetting your router as it might fix the issue, if not, RMA that thing!

P.S. if the issue occurs even when using the new router, let me know

Try pinging your default gateway while being plugged into the router. If you have high ping, the router is the problem, if not, then the issue might require some investigation. it might be an issue with your ISP. If that's the case, do some speed tests while being connected to your modem (use fast.com just in case the closest server for ookla isn't very good), it should result in the same crappy speeds.

Testing with fast.com

I've got 140Kbps with router on.

With the modem directly I get 9.1Mbps

I did the ping thing with the default gateway and all packages are below 30ms

I tried with an old router (the Linksys wr45g that I mentioned in the post) and it worked at 100% speed for a while, then again it dropped to about 10% and now it works 100% again.

I honestly don't know. Maybe the new router is faulty? Should I check with RMA?
