well these CPU's are fairly close in a lot of aspects that's maybe why you didn't find a definitive answer, the I7-5820k as you know has more cores/threads than the I7-6700k but the 6700 has a better single core performance and usually gets better FPS in games due to newer architecture and access to DDR4 RAM which is nice to have. The 5820k on the other hand usually out preforms the 6700k when it comes to rendering due to the higher core count but this depends on what program you use. Sorry to give such a non definitive answer but in my opinion 6700k will be the better choice unless you render more than you play games.

I do about the same of each for renders/Gaming so didn't know which i wanted to get, since at my local microcenter i can get the both around the same price at ~ 280$ for the cpu with a compatible motherboard

if you render as much as you game then the I7-5820k is the better choice, the I7-6700k preforms slightly better in game usually by like 1-5fps but the I7-5820k is a larger margin better at rendering than the I7-6700k is so get a nice X99 motherboard and a I7-5820k you will be set :)
