Hello folks, I have a serious problem and I could really use some help. I have an old rig from 2009 with an ASUS P5KPL-AM motherboard with two DIMM DDR2 slots. I tried to upgrade my computer for gaming and went pretty much all-out for my budget getting a graphics card and since I had a lot of problems with a lack of memory and my pc blackscreening at random with most of the newer games I decided to get some memory sticks as well... Initially I got the wrong card which didn't fit, so my PC didn't boot.
When I tried putting the old memory sticks back I got it back on but now only 2GB of the initial 4 were available to me. The pc doesn't show there's only 2GB usable out of the 4 installed. Instead it only registers 2GB installed. I removed them again, and after fiddling around I realized both memory sticks still worked but only one of the slots seems to react. Meanwhile, thinking one of the cards were bust, I ordered another pair of 4GB DDR2s (which my motherboard should be able to use). I installed those, and again my pc didn't boot, so now I'm back on the old one (only using one of the two currently since my pc doesn't recognize the other).
The problem now is that though I have the suspicion one of the slots is bust, I have no money to buy a new motherboard and processor and whatnot, and I can't refund the memory sticks I bought. The customer service at the shop I initially bought the computer said I could send the motherboard back to the factory, but that hassle aside, I still find it hard to believe the slot is actually broken, since it's not the slot I initially tried to install the wrong card in. Nonetheless I'd like to either keep this motherboard or at the very least find a replacement that supports my current intel core 2 quad Q8200 processor and DDR2 memory.
Does anyone have any ideas? As you can see this is really an awful mess I've gotten myself into and I really don't have the budget to make any major changes.

Update: On top of everything I still bought the wrong memory cards... I just found out my computer uses DDR2-800mhz, and the ones I got have 667mhz. It currently says it works in single channel mode. I'm not sure if it used to work on dual channel to be honest, but it still only uses one of the two installed memory cartridges.
