Hi,
My apologies in advance if this has already been addressed.

I have an ASUS U56E purchased roughly 2011 running Windows 7. Some files are on USB devices but not all.

Currently Windows 7 will not 'run.' When I turn on the laptop I see the ASUS prompt for passcode and when that is given Windows seems to try to start. After a minute or so there a screen quickly flashes and I am back to the ASUS request for passcode.

I do not have Windows 7 startup disks but a local 'pc help' shop has tried to run Windows 7 using their 'startup' disks via one of the USB ports. (My DVD drive is 'weak.') This did not work and they saw what I had been seeing. (Note: When I asked them if they had an activation code they did not understand what I was saying.)

Given the age of the computer and other 'problems' I am willing to just get all of my data/files off of the device in a manner that allows me to transfer these to a new laptop (Mac or PC) and they decide what to do with the ASUS. If there is another way to get Windows 7 to 'run' I am open to trying it though to what end is unclear.

A major concern is that I am able to get all or as many as possible of the files, data, etc. Some are are the 'desktop'. Some are program files. etc.

Any and all advice is grateful. I am glad this site exists.

William

The quickest and safest way to obtain all your files would be to pull the hard drive and put in in an enclosure, or buy a USB to Sata adapter, they call all be purchased for around $10-20. I would not keep trying to boot windows for fear of doing damage to the drive in case it is failing and not just failing to boot to windows.
