I live with my family and they have online work which needs to be done but I enjoy online gaming. So when they are uploading/downloading I get 700-900 ping which usually ends up getting me kicked off of the online video game. I'm hardwired into the router that is right beside my computer but I was wondering if there was a router that is capable of splitting up the connection so that we can all use it without having very bad lag spikes. I don't know my way around routers so any help with this would be great. ;)

You need to use the QoS setting and your router must actually have very advanced option that allow you to limit the download bandwidth to fixed rates. QoS is one of the most advanced network topic there is so you will have lots to learn.

Still lets say you figure out how to do this and your router can actually do what you need. What you will in effect do is block other people from using their applications so you can play your game. It really depends how large your connection is but it is still a trade off...who is more important. A larger connection has more to share but someone will always get less than they really want. I would make sure you have agreement on this topic before you try to implement it.

Thanks for the reply and I have already talked to them about it before posting on here. The original idea was if we could get 1/3 of the connection each, it would be the best so that we could all use it at the same time. Looks like our internet company can put internet on the same line as the dtvr so that my family can use that because they don't use time sensitive applications and then I'm going to be using the router for gaming. Thanks for the quick reply. =)

You can set it up that way but it is so wasteful. All the routers I have seen are really stupid. Say you have 12m connection you can set each person up to have 4m. Problem is they will always have 4m reserved even if they are not using it. The router will not detect this and let someone else use it.

I am not sure why this is not implemented commercial equipment has had the ability for years. Then again you can't really restrict the download traffic on any router. If some server were to send someone 10mbit/sec of data all you router can do is throw away 6mbit of the data and give the remaining to the user in your house. It still used up 10m of your download speed and unless the end user machine has some feature to tell the server to slow down its rate of transfer it will continue to send at 10mbit using up your connection.

Still as long as they are not using torrent to download the OS itself will detect this addition data dropped as errors and attempt to slow the connection speed down. It works even better for apps like youtube or netflix that will dynamically adjust the quality based on performance.

It is as good as you are going to get unfortunately so all you can do is try it an hope it is good enough.

It tends to be rather tricky to configure on many routers. Not sure why they don't just let you key in a bunch of IP and tell how much up and down bandwidth each gets.
