Hi,
I am looking to purchase a replacement CPU for an old athlon II x4 processor. I recently purchased an open-box gigabyte board (990FXA-UD3) from microcenter and they are running a deal to pair it with a CPU for $40 off. Right now both the FX-8320E and FX-6300 are $89 a piece. I am mostly using the PC for gaming, productivity, and occasional rendering. I intend on overclocking whatever chip I use but since the 8320E core speeds are throttled to match the 95Watt TDP is there any benefit of having the 8 cores (4 physical) and lower clock speed (w/ OC).

Thanks,
TK

For gaming, not so much. But if you do rendering apps that can utilize more cores, or have several apps open at once, the 8320E would be preferred.
Even at stock, the 8320E isn't all that much slower than the stock 6300 (3.2/4.0 vs 3.5/4.1 GHz). Since you OC, the differences will diminish anyway.
I would opt for the 8320E, myself.

I'm also contemplating an upgrade for my current Athlon X3 450.
High number of cores might make a lot of difference with the implementation of Directx12 in new games and gpus.
I wouldn't hesitate picking the fx-8320e. Of course there is no benefit in it having a lower clock speed(smth like 10% lower single core performance) but the high core count already makes a difference(prolly 20% better multi-core performance over the 6300) and as I said it might make a bigger difference in the future.
Damn those prices ... I'd love to have an fx 8320e for 89$

Nope, i live in Romania. fx-8320e is 150$ here and that is like 1/3 of my monthly wage . haha . But I got gigabit internet for 8$/month so I got that going for me, which is nice :)

I've owned and OC'd them both. There is no reason to get the FX-6300 if they are both the same price. Overclocking they both will top out at more or less the same speed and newer games will take advantage of the extra threads of the FX-8320E.
