Possible Faulty PSU?

Hi guys,

In the last two weeks two USB audio devices have stopped working.

A scarlet solo audio interface and a samson go mic.. Both completely dead and do not get recognised on the main pc. Nor on my laptop.

Could I have a faulty psu? And if so what is the likelyhood of the motherboard being damaged?

I'm weary of replacing anything if there is a chance they could also get damaged.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Mike

Solution
Recommend a surge protector or ups to invest in and save for. Your electricity may be healthy and stable, but better safe than sorry. You never know
If it was a problem with power Wackystrat.

The first thing to check is device manager of windows and the Usb ports listed there.

Any port not working due to a driver corruption or a lack of power will have a yellow exclamation mark next to it, and by clicking on properties will show an error code.

If the usb devices are old, you should check what usb specification speed they run at 2.0 spec speed should be what both devices work with when connected to a usb 2.0 port of either the system or laptop you have.

I will say if the devices do use a usb 2.0 specification then in some cases if you connect the devices in question to a Usb 3.0 or 3.1 specification usb port of the laptop or the tower based system then in most cases they fail to be detected as they are not usb 3.0 or 3.1 enabled devices.

So you move them over to a usb 2.0 port of the system or laptop, then they should work.

If a usb port becomes faulty, is either overpowered or under powered then it can be why a device connected to it does, or is not detected.

You should also check in the bios of your motherboard if the usb ports have been disabled.
It would be the case if the bios at any point in time was reset back to factory defaults.

If so you would have to enable the usb ports in the bios.
New motherboards with a Uefi bios can support up to 16 Usb ports where each port can be enabled or disabled in the bios of the motherboard.

So I would check if they are still enabled on the bios Wackystrat.

Thanks for the reply shaun.

Everything is fine in the bios. Before they stopped working they were behaving sporadically. Disconnecting and reconnecting them selves in Windows. Until the point where I've tried every USB port and various cables on three speprate pcs now (with drivers obvs) and neither show up in any of the device managers.

Would that point to damage from a power surge maybe? Scratching my head on this one!

Possible surge, yes. What I would do is replace the psu, if you still notice things, then maybe it's a dead board
