Nope the 1060 is better than a 980 which will max out 1080p with more than 60 fps . The 1070 is the sweet spot for 1440p gaming. And it is over kill for 1080p . Go for a 1060 or a 980 . 1060 looks more future proof. The 1060 and 1070 are cards that can not sli with because the 1060 sli and you will play 4k with 20fps and the 1070sli is overkill for the 4k .and you can get the 1080 for that resolution . You cant play 8k with 2x 1070s so if you sli ... Well .... Go for a 1080 two of these can play 8k with 40 fps. But don't sli it doesn't worth it. If you sli you alos need to upgrade your monitor .unless you go for 2x and 3x monitors at 1080p .

1060/980 would be future proof for 2-3 years while 1070 would still do good for 4-5 years. Considering OP took 10 years to upgrade his last PC. The next one probably won't be before 5 years.
