Hello.
Right off the bat, I just wanna say, I am 13 going on 14 years old, and pretty big on games.
So, I run this MacBook Pro Early 2015, 13 inch laptop.
I feel like I cannot do anything on it. I can't mod my stuff, I can't download my stuff(jailbreaking my phone being on example) , I can play little to no steam games.

It costs around $1,200, and I received it from my Grandpa about a year ago.

I want to sell it and purchase a 800 dollar or so (pre-built) gaming PC.

I have brought this idea to them and they tell me we already have a PC. (a 8 year old Windows Xp)

How can I convince them to let me do this?

Solution
Definitely agreed there. Honestly, a macbook is still a very good platform to work on. What makes you feel limited with it? Is there something with school that isn't compatible with mac? One of the big reasons I convinced my friend's parents to get him a new PC was because of the Hardware intensive drafting software we use at school, which would be a just choice. I myself built my PC for gaming and streaming, but honestly after a year or so, it's been getting pretty old. On top of that, depending on the specs of your mac, you might not even get the same performance with an $800 gaming PC after you factor in the cost of the monitor. I myself would say to hang on to the Mac, if my grandfather gave it to me I would cherish it and not sell...
why would they want you to have a pc specifically for gaming? it must be advantageous for them in order to allow it. are your grades stellar? are you a big help around the house? are you going to use it for more than just games? if you give them some concrete reasons or show your determination to make it a positive choice and show why it would be a valuable thing for you and them.

you would take a huge loss in value by selling a used laptop and ontop of that it would be insulting to your grandfather to do such. he may also not want to spend so much on you in the future as it seems a bit ungrateful. to counter this there would need to be a significant advantage to them. just wanting to play games is not a good reason when you look at the parenting side of things.

too many children fall into the pit of playing games all day and they may want to avoid that. since this is seen as a big negative they will likely oppose you on this unless you can prove otherwise.

ultimately you need to abide by their decision whether you like it or not though.

A macbook will let you get a lot more done versus a gaming PC. How does the mac limit you when it comes to downloading jailbreaking and school in general? If it's steam you're looking for, look into doing a dual boot to run windows through boot camp. That way you can chose which operating systems works for you, and it may be considerably less expensive.

as far as school is concerned the apple laptop is just as good as a pc. as i said before there would need to be good reasons for it and you have provided none. i highly doubt at 14 you will be using any programs which require a pc over a mac but if there were this may be a benefit to bring up.

jailbreaking stuff is not a plus. this is a problem and your parents would disprove.
downloading stuff may also be a problem.

so far this is the same "but i want a gaming pc" argument we see so much. this goes nowhere unless you are willing to make it less of a negative impact on your life and more of a positive one.
