Choosing between equal priced i7 3700k or 4690k

Hey guys, I'm looking to switch from AMD to Intel. I'm mostly gaming/casual/sometimes stream for fun, nothing too serious (dual monitor if that's relevant).

Anyway, I found two good deals each for $200

i7 3770k + asrock z77

i5 4690k + Gigabyte z97 HD3.

I've looked at every benchmark and comparison post under the sun and both seem to be exactly the same in current performance and longevity. It seems marginal but I don't want to regret losing a feature one has over the other given the equal price. Which would you choose I really can't decide. Thanks!

With the Z chipset boards, and both processors being K series unlocked processors, I would say overclocking would be something you're looking at, correct?

With a nice air cooler like a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo, I would say that the i5-4690K would be your better bet. As it has a higher core for core performance as it is.

That being said, this is kind of a toss up. It really goes down to what titles you play. For streaming, the hyper threading on the i7-3770K may be an advantage, and the extra cores that it affords may help in titles like GTA V and The Witcher III.

That being said, I own an i5-4690K and I have absolutely no problems running any titles, streaming, etc.

Hope I helped. Personally, even at equal prices. I would go with the newer technology, as Haswell is faster than Ivy Bridge.

Mostly because from what I can tell the performance increase isn't great from Skylake over either of these 2 CPUS nor DDR4, at least for the cost being about ~350 for cpu/mobo/ram compared to the $200 for both offered here. Budget is a concern.

Yeah I've wanted to dabble in OCing for a while but never had the money or tech. Especially given my tendency to hold onto parts until they start melting on me it was definitely something I wanted to be able to do to squeeze out a little more lifespan. I have heard mixed things about Hyper threading in newer CPU heavy games, that's whats making this so difficult, along with the higher clock. Although I heard Dx12 should be leveling the playing field by spreading out core usage in i5s? Very helpful though, thanks!

I would agree that the performance gains from Skylake for the money just aren't there. Though DDR4 pricing has stabilized, and so has Z170 motherboard pricing. I think you'd be hard pressed to find an unlocked Skylake processor, and motherboard for 200 bucks. If such a deal does exist, let me in on it!

I will agree with CTurbo though and recommend the i5-4690K. It's generally a better idea to go with the newest CPU you can, and highest end.
