Hello,

I'm looking to upgrade my mobo but i don't want to only upgrade my mobo i also want to upgrade my CPU, i wanted to know if upgrading to an I7 3960x will do much good, i'm going to buy a GIGABYTE GA-X99 to go along with it but will i see much of an upgrade? The reason being is i want to soon be able to run a 1080 and ik my processor isn't able to do this very well, i had some bottleneck issues with the 1070 and my I5,

I would be selling my processor & motherboard to put towards the entire upgrade, i'd be paying roughly $130 for the entire upgrade if i did this, is it worth it?

Thank you!

Solution

The 3960X is Sandy Bridge-E, the 3570K is Ivy Bridge. Still a step back, but the architectural difference between Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge is pretty small.

unless you need the PCIe lanes or edit a lot of video and need the extra 2 cores (4/6 if you meant the i7 5960x / i7 6960x) not really. you sure you don't mean an i7 6960x or i7 5960x?....the i7 3960x uses a x78 based motherboard. even so still not really a big upgrade. I am running an i7 3930k which i have zero plans to upgrade until zen or skylake-e/ kaby lake hit.

if the i7 3960x is the CPU your getting your actually stepping back a generation in CPU architecture (sandy bridge based from your current ivy bridge build). So clock for clock your current CPU per core is more powerful but you will receive two more cores. and as i mentioned you need an x78 motherboard not an x99. x99 is socket 2011v3 while the x78 is socket 2011...close but not the same nor are they compatible.

What about this one?

//www.ebay.com/itm/New-Intel-DX79TO-Extreme-Series-LGA-2011-Motherboard-ONLY-No-accessories-/351743355179?hash=item51e589a92b:m:mxzVwDZeEnn_yJbJSMJ1KXQ

Apparently this one supports the 3960x

as a matter of fact it will work. You see... always go for processor that is well known
