I like my system, but the only thing that kind of bothers me is that my motherboard can only support up to 8GB ( I have 2x4GB DDR3 RAM ). If it was a thing of just getting a better lga 1155 board with more ram, that would solve my problems, but the thing is that I would also have to buy a windows 10 key to use with it (my system was an OEM HP which I upgraded except for the HDD and mobo).
Also, I think its time to upgrade to a more modern system, but Im hesitant to go all the way up to skylake since it uses ddr4 and I want to save some money by just adding more ddr3 ram.
Some people say the i5 4590 is a pretty decent cpu that can hold its own against an i5 6500, so that could be my alternative. I can also score an i5 4690k for around $180, so Im not sure if I Overclock that one that could put it to compete against a powerful skylake cpu. Im pretty sure an i7 is out of the question because an i5 is good enough for gaming, right?

In resume:
i5 6500 + lga 1151 mobo + 12GB ddr4 ram?
or
i5 4590 + lga 1150 mobo + one extra 4GB ddr3 ram (or maybe another 2x4GB ddr3 since its recommended to add memory sticks in pairs? cant be 3 slots only?)
or
i5 4690k devils canyon + CM cpu cooler (for oc purposes) + lga 1150 mobo + extra ddr3 ram?

I'd go Skylake - either way, Skylake or Haswell you say you need more DRAM and going with Haswell and DDR3 or Skylake/DDR3) offers no guarantees that you'll simply be able to add more DRAM to your existing. The forums are full of people that decided they would simply 'add' more DRAM and it's a crapshoot, it may work, might not (especially using older sticks with new, but it's even problematic buying two identical sets at the same time - I've gotten matching sets from manufacturers that wouldn't play nice

I read that either you get an lga 1151 mobo with ddr3 support or one with ddr4 support (most common), but not one with both. Plus its not as straightforward to use it with ddr3 ram. I want to keep it simple.

With some discounts I can get an i5 6500 with mobo and ddr4 ram for around $350. I can also get an i5 4590 with mobo and extra ddr3 ram for $250.

I still havent seen examples of games that benefit significantly from ddr4 ram when compared to ddr3.
