Witcher 3 - Questions

I decided to branch out from my usual gaming and have a go at Witcher 3. Normally play any sort of FPS/AAA game. Really enjoying it. Looks stunning and quite happy with my rig for pulling a locked 60fps at ultrawide...even if it does push the gpu to the max!

My question, being newish to this game and the genre, is what to focus on. Obviously get on with quests etc...but all the potions/character stuff/alchemy is quite in depth.

So for a noob to the game - hints?

as you pregress the game you will find quests called "exploration quests" (I thinks thats how they are called).
you can find really good gear that way, doing side quests for blacksmiths will also give you good gear and one of them will unlock you the best blacksmith in the game, alchemy and potions are nothing really that useful unless youa re playing on harder difficulties.
but here are some of the main things in alchemy,
Oils - buffs you weapon for a limited time of strikes, can be used for 20 - 60 charges depending on the oil - oils

Runes & Glyphs - Used to upgrade your weapons and armor, runes for wapons and glyphs for armor. Both of them come with 2 levels the first one "lesser" and the better one "grater".
they are applied using any blacksmith and only few of them can be put on each gear, the amount of runes that can be put on each gear depends on the gear itself. - Upgrades

Potions & Decoctions - Consumables that can be replenished by medicating while having some kind of alchohol in you inventory. Potions and decoctions affect Geralt in diffrent ways for each kind of potion and decoction. When using the toxicity meter will rise, it is a green bar bellow the health bar, the higher the meter more side effect geralt will have, when the meter is at max some potions and decoctions can be lethal. The toxicity given by potions is smaller than the decoctions but so is their effect and duration. - Decoctions Potions

Food - The most basic way of replenishing health, if you have played Skyrim then you know how it works, stuff food into your mouth untill your health is full. there is no limit to how much food you can eat.

If you want to ask anything else feel free ^.^
Edit : This took too much time to write.

Thanks for the above. I have been playing and getting used to it. I moved on from White Orchard after a few quests. Then realised its quite hard to do the next bit without some stuff from WO. So I fast travelled back to get the cool sword and finish the side quests. I assume you can do this freely without following the main quest for a bit? Building the character up etc ?

Yes side quests are a good way to get stronger as I said in the first message. Not all side quests unlock instantly and you need to do some of the story before unlocking them.

Ok cool. I have done the majority in White orchard....took a while. Now have some decent steel and silver swords...plus some better clothing/armour. Good collection of loot etc. Still on early Level 4 and most of the stuff in Velen needs L5 (suggested)...I've done bits...just a case of doing bits and pieces until levelling up? Quickest way?
