So I have a hard wire going to my router as internet.
I need some device that plugs in between/middle of the hard wire and router to give me extra ethernet ports to connect to my new computer, and router. I have seen "ethernet hubs and switches" but I have no clue what I need.

ALSO. I must have a working internet connection. It is a gaming rig so I must have access to web browsing, etc.

This is how the setup has to be: (can it be done?)

Modern -> ethernet cable -> switch -> ethernet cable -> router
⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔ switch -> ethernet cable -> computer

This is my current setup:

Modern -> ethernet cable -> router -> ethernet cable -> computer

The ⏔⏔⏔ is just a spacer.

It can be done if you have a good smart switch or your ISP allows for multiple IPs.

Is there a specific reason you want the computer between the modem and router?

Your current setup:
Modern -> ethernet cable -> router -> ethernet cable -> computer

Your new setup should be:
Modern -> ethernet cable -> router -> ethernet cable -> 8 port switch -> 7 ethernet cables -> 7 computers and other devices

Make your life easy and don't try and put anything between the router and the modem. Then fork it at the router, so one cable to goes to the computer and one cable runs to a switch. Or just run everything from the switch if need be if your router only has one port.

Modem -> ethernet cable -> router -> fork it here

Yes, I have less bandwidth set on my router so when other computers in my home that use the router can never harm my ability on my gaming pc. That is just a piece of what the situation is, but not all of it either.

The modem serves up one and only one IP address. To the first device it sees. Generally the router.

OK..it can work, if you spend a stupidly large amount of money on a managed switch, and hours and hours in the config.

"That is just a piece of what the situation is, but not all of it either."
What are the rest of these 'pieces'?
For a real solution, we kinda need to know the whole situation.
