Hi Guys,

I have had on-going problems with my PC for the past week or two. And I don't know if it is co-incidental or if I have done something to cause the problems.

It started off, when my PC would randomly start itself up. So I played around with the power settings in windows and turned off fast start up and a few other options (like graphics card NOT waking up the PC). Then around that same time my PC started taking longer and longer to Boot. And it started getting ridiculous, as in 1/2 and hour to boot to Windows with just a black screen. Then I started getting error messages stating the BIOS has been reset to default values and showing a list of my HDD and USB devices. So I went into the BIOS and played with the OC Genie Button (MSI Gaming mobo), and the PC restarted twice, but then went to the black screen again and hasn't worked since.

I 've also noticed that when I open the DVD tray it will close immediately (whilst in this black screen state). So I can't get back into the BIOS, I can't get to windows, I can't get anywhere.

Can anyone help as to what this might be? Could the OC Genie button I hit have fried the CPU? I'm stressing because the problem just keeps getting worse and now it's at a point where nothing works :(

Thanks,

Thank you. I will try this first and report back.

I can't even get my specs because I can't get into anything. Will have to check my specs manually because the PC is 2 years old so I can't remember all off the top of my head.

I will try the CMOS reset, and if no go I am going to try removing a few things - RAM, etc. to see if anything happens.

I will report back when I have done these things. Thanks for your help.

I have tried a few things now to no avail -

Removed CMOS battery, left it out for 45 min, replaced.
Removed RAM
Removed GPU
connected HDMI direct from monitor to on board mobo port
removed all preiphials and SATA from power supply.
tried a different monitor

Still the same problem. I should clarify it's not really a black screen.. it is no signal at all to the monitor. For the past 2 weeks the boot process has been slow, taking 1/2 hour to 1 hour, and now nothing. would this point to a bad PSU? Or does it sound more like the CPU or MOBO? The hardest problem I am having is determining exactly what it is.

Specs are below, some I can't actually confirm because I can't get into the PC. It's 2 years old and I can't remember the CPU off the top of my head sorry.

I should also ad that as I was removing components and putting them back in, I had the PC lying down on it's side, and I found a small ball bearing right next to it. Is it possible it fell out of the PSU? Because it was right near the back of the PSU on the floor. I don't know where else it would have come from. The PSU had always made loud whirring sounds sporadically since I got the PC. It went away for the past year or so, but strangely enough when I did the "hold power button in for 1 minute while disconnected", when I turned the PC back on the PSU whirring sound was back and loud as hell. Then when I remove these components I find a ball bearing there. Maybe I'm clutching at straws here, but any chance the ball bearing came from the PSU? confirming that the PSU is the trouble maker here?

no post.

My next idea was to check the PSU. I have a friend coming over tomorrow with a spare and will check that.

I'm really hoping it is the PSU, and not the Motherboard or CPU (due to cost to replace).

Because of the strange noises the PSU makes and has intermittently made since I had it, I am thinking that is where the problem is.

I will report back after swapping the PSU. Any advice here is appreciated.

hi, have you solve it?heres an idea in the case you didnt, hope it helps, Today while booting , l disconected the DVD RW and after turning on the monitor saw a system repair screen, then after trying several starting options with the black screen as a result did this: unplugged the DVI to VGA plug and everything else but the keyboard ,plugged an old monitor, waited like 15 minutes, then started with troubleshoot mode, waited another 15 to 20 min, starts up, then re started windows. This solved it at least for now, but its way slow to start up and stop loading now.
