Hello everyone,

My problem:
Yesterday, I was having trouble using my newly built computer. I was browsing through my files and the whole OS froze. I left it there for a good 30mins thinking that it was merely not responding, but it stayed there. I tried to reboot it and sometimes it wouldn't boot up and will tell me to insert a proper boot device. Sometimes, it will boot into my desktop but I can't click anything, its a frozen screen of my desktop with a moving mouse. I've been using this computer for a week without problems until yesterday. UEFI sometimes detect my SSD, sometimes not.

My Specifications:
Gigabyte HD3P Z170 Motherboard
Intel i5-6500
A Data SP500 120GB SSD

My attempted solutions:
-I tried changing the sata slot that my SSD is plugged into
-Changing boot priority of my SSD to it only, unplugged everything else
-I tried downloading a fresh copy of Windows 10, booted from a USB and when I tried to reinstall it wouldn't detect my SSD , even though my motherboard already detected it when I went into boot options before and saw my SSD and bootable USB.
-Also, in the "repair computer" part of the Windows 10 bootable install, I tried to reset my PC, but it says my drive is also missing.

Overall, I am very stumped. I tried almost everything that came to mind and it really baffles me why my motherboard does sometimes "see" my SSD but when I try to reinstall windows, it just stops working. I would really appreciate it if someone could please help me with this situation. I'm not sure if its an SSD problem, or the sata cable problem (I tried 3 different ones)

Thanks for your time, Bill

Hey there, Bill.

Since you've done all the basic troubleshooting except for trying the SSD with a different computer, I'd recommend that you go ahead and do that if possible.

Having in mind that everything you've tried was to no avail I really seems like it could be the SSD's fault. Try updating its firmware, if there's an available update for that drive model, and of course, if you're able to boot to Windows at all and use your computer.

You could also try updating/resetting your BIOS/UEFI and see if that fixes things up.

If none of the suggestions work for you, I'd recommend that you get in touch with the vendor you got it from (or the manufacturer) and try to RMA it.

Hope that helps.
