BSOD's and a Constantly Crashing Computer - Help!

I have a PC that I built a few years ago. Been running great. A couple of days ago. I got a BSOD (first ever on this machine). Booted back up just fine and was working.

Then I went on a business trip and now I'm back and things are strange.

First off, the machine takes 2-4 tries to boot. It starts, and then will shut off before anything appears on the monitor. Sometimes on the second try (but sometimes not until the 4th) it makes it into the boot cycle (ASUS MB). I found some forums where people said that their computer is always like this, but I've never had this before on any machine.

Now here's where things get interesting:

Once, I got a BSOD before even having logged into windows. But most times now, I get a BSOD somewhere within 5 minutes of booting up. The first BSOD referenced a .sys file associated with AVG, so I uninstalled all AVG-related stuff in safe mode. That didn't work.

I'm still crashing. I ran a chkdsk and nothing was wrong there. I'm not even sure how to keep the computer running long enough for me to start the sort of troubleshooting I'm used to doing.

And in case it's relevant, I haven't installed any new software or peripherals since April when I got my Oculus Rift. And it was running great up until now.

Is this bad memory?
Is this a virus?
Is this my HD crapping out?
I've never run into this before.

running windows 7

Hello... Would you try "simple test" and remove the MB battery and do a CMOS clear... and then replace with a new one? 2/$1@$1 store. Depending on your MB/CPU/GPU the default video output could be changed and need a BIO's setting changed for this (save&exit).
