So I've been seeing a lot of news about i5's typically not being strong enough for a GTX 1070 and I've seen some videos to prove that this is true... Would it even be worth spending all the money to upgrade to an i7 at all? People are saying it only bottlenecks in the most extreme places such as Novigrad in Whitcher 3... I haven't had chance to test myself as I'm abroad but want to order parts as soon as I get back, hence why I'm asking on here

My specs are;

i5 4690k @ 4.4Ghz
Msi GTX 1070
8GB ddr3 Ram @ 1666 MHz

Would upgrading to 16GB of the fastest DDR3 ram you can get help at all?

Thanks for the help, Calvin

I have an i5-4690k undervolted and overclocked to 4.0GHz paired with my Gigabyte G1 1070 that boosts to 1985MHz. I also have 16GB of RAM. With this combo I haven't tried a single game that isn't well above 60 FPS on my 2560x1440 monitor.

I considered bringing my i5-4690k back to stock voltage and overclocking it higher but I haven't felt the need to do so yet. There might be a bottleneck with this CPU if you are trying to play at 144 FPS but I doubt it will prevent you from getting a solid 60 FPS in any game, especially if you are playing at 1080p. You never mentioned your resolution but I can tell you that an i5-4690k and 1070 is perfect for 1440p gaming. Don't bother upgrading your CPU yet.

upgrading to 16gb ram is a good idea from my experience as for the system its self your fine with a 1070 as stated only for 144hz will you be bottlenecked and even then its minimal as a i7 will most likely too
my guess is a 1070 sli is fine with that cpu

Not worth upgrading CPU, consider it for your next build. The i5 is plenty strong enough for a 1070 or even 1080 sli.
Some games hit the CPU more than the gpu but most are gpu bound. Generally true for open world games.
As suggested above some extra ram will help somewhat in those situations.
