Hello everyone,

First of all, thank you, in advance, for all of your answers :)

As I wrote in the title, I have decided to build my first computer and I am faced with a dilemma. I have two options: either buy a gigabyte gtx 1060 g1 gaming for around 400 dollars (that is the price in my country) or buy a gigabyte gtx 970 windforce OC (factory OC) from a friend for around 250 dollars (it costs 350 dollars in my country), he has used it for a year and now wants to get a gtx 1070 as he wants to shift to 1440p gaming. I am fine with 1080p 60 fps gaming. I can afford both scenarios but I wonder what you guys would do if you were in my shoes. I chose the following configuration for my first build (according to my budget):
Case: nox hummer mc black
Cpu: intel i5 6500
Ram: Kingston hyper 8gb DDR4 2400
Motherboard: MSI (a regular 1151 socket one as I am not interested in overclocking)
cooler: hyper evo 212
HDD: seagate 1TB
monitor: Benq 22" LED Full HD (60Hz)

Thank you again for your answers and help :)

Solution
Considering the type of monitor you have and the $150 you'd save, I'd go for the GTX 970. It's still a very capable card.

Going off topic, why are you getting a 212 EVO? The standard Intel heatsink is perfectly sufficient for an i5-6500.

Is the difference in performance between the two cards that considerable to leave me no choice but to opt for the 1060?

I don't think that the 1060 is so far out of the 970's league that it's not even close or something; the 1060 only beats the 970 by a thin margin of about 500 in passmarks, but more VRAM and a much higher core clock means the 1060 will be a relevant card much longer than the 970.

I decided to opt for a 212 EVO just in case I needed it in the future. If I decided to change the mobo and cpu that is :)

That is what I heard: that the difference between the two cards is not that big. I mean, I guess that 970 owners should not necessarily upgrade and go with a 1060 right? My confusion comes from the fact that I am building my pc and both cards are there in the market. That is my predicament.

From what I understand, the difference between the two is not huge. There is, however, a measurable difference between the two cards where the 1060 is better in just about every regard (save maybe pricing and availability). The only real place the 970 is better is with the ability to SLI, which the 1060 cannot do.

IMO, if you have the money, go for the 1070. If you don't have the money for a 1070, compare your GPU needs against the price you're willing to spend. You can probably find a 970 cheap, hell, you might even find a 980(ti) for the price that 970s are normally if you don't mind grabbing one used soon.
